Mistral opens a preview of Large 4; model weights are still to come
The French lab made an API preview available on October 6 for its 1-trillion-parameter multimodal model, trained on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in Europe. Mistral says the 49-billion-active-parameter model performs strongly on coding and cybersecurity tests; Reuters independently covered the launch and interviewed its executives, but those performance comparisons remain Mistral's claims. Mistral plans to release the weights later in October, while vetted security testers get early access. ·
Why it mattersEuropean developers can test the model now, but self-hosting depends on the promised weight release.
